A Manly Man’s Cardio Class
The beach season is just around the corner. What guy doesn’t want 6 pack?
The popularity of the spin classes has spawned a new class at Ageless… The Manly Man’s Cardio Class. For 30-45 minutes, we’ll spin, row, swing, punch, and may even get to use the new TRX Rip Trainers.
Much like the current spin classes, the Manly Man’s Cardio Class will:
- Be held in the spin room in the basketball court area (the size of the spin room will be expanding very soon)
- Scheduled by appointment only. Only 4-5 spots will be available in each class. Class times will vary depending on the interest.
- Last approximately 30-45 minutes
- Blend aerobic and anaerobic conditioning into one class
- Be led by one of our male instructors
- Cost for $5 for non-members and members who do not have 12 month members. Free for 12 month members.
If you have a heart rate monitor, please bring it. Rest periods will be based off your heart rate recovery. If you don’t have a monitor, your rest periods will be based off of the instructor’s heart rate. We may even get really fancy, and use HRV to adjust the intensity of the class to your recovery level.
These classes will NOT interfere with your strength training. In fact, if your aerobic base is pathetic, they will actually help you lift heavier weights by improving your recovery ability.
What’s the difference between the Manly Man’s Cardio Class and Spartacus?
As far as energy systems go, the Manly Man’s Cardio Class leans a little more toward aerobic training than Spartacus. Work sets will hover in the 1-3 minute range. It’s designed to be a substitute for running or biking. At Spartacus, we try to spend as much time training our anaerobic system as possible, although the aerobic system still gets a workout. Thus, our sets are usually no longer than 30-40 seconds.
Class size is also different. The Manly Man’s Cardio Class will include no more than 5 guys. At Spartacus, we have as many as 40 guys.
The final major difference is the exercise prescription and progression. Because the Manly Man’s Cardio Class only accepts up to 5 guys at once, we can make it more specific to each individual guy. Our rest periods are based on each individual’s heart rate recovery. Each session is also built upon the previous session (longer durations, RPMs, etc) so progression is automatically built in. Because Spartacus has so many guys going at once, we can’t possibly tailor it to each guy’s recovery and exercise level.
Will the Manly Man’s Cardio Class replace one of my strength workouts?
No. We consider it an aerobic workout. It should replace a treadmill session.
What’s the goal of this class?
To lose weight, improve your aerobic conditioning, and improve your ability to recover from strength training sessions. Basically, we’re trying to make you more manly.
